Hi, I'm Jan

This is season seven of growing fresh flowers for all you flower fans! Before I started Jan’s Artisan Garden, I worked in science education and visual arts. I feel like our farm and gardens are an intersection of many things I am passionate about! I love the applied science of growing things, I get to use my nerdy plant biology skills, and it allows me to experiment with creating sustainable and beautiful flower gardens.

After producing our flowers off a small urban plot for three years, in 2021 we moved most of our cut flowers to our new farm in Afton, MN. We still operate out of our tiny urban plot in St Louis Park, but will be using the garden to experiment more with native plants.  See below for a visual storytelling of our urban garden & farm coming to life & thanks for stopping by!

We removed every blade of grass,

buckthorn & creeping charlie, a yard of clay and mud. It wasn't pretty.

It's amazing what a few plants can do.

Having a green thumb is a myth. We strongly advocate that anybody can make a beautiful garden. Persistence!

Every square inch was flowers.

We loved our 1/10th of an acre, tiny, urban, backyard farm, but a few years and tens of thousands of flowers later, it felt a bit pinched

The mad rush of summer before the long quiet.

One of our favorite parts of flowers are their innate, fleeting nature, but we sure wish our summers were a bit longer.

Afton beauty.

A few acres nestled into the forest. We embarked on a whole new adventure in fall 2020.

Just imagine a field of sandy loam.

We planted the first rows, then realized just how much more space it was!

We kept planting & planting & planting.

Irrigation & landscape fabric laid, sandbags filled, row cover protects the babies.

Ha! We wish it were that easy.

Buckets & buckets of sweat powered those blooms. And when they came, wow, they came in with style. Cool summer's eve, bees nestling into flowers, bird songs softening, you can forget it all.
